Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is a good salary in Dubai for a UK professional?

For a single professional, AED 15,000 to AED 20,000 a month covers a comfortable life with savings. A family usually needs AED 30,000 or more once rent, schooling and health cover are counted.

2. Is a Dubai salary really tax free?

There is no UAE personal income tax on employment pay, so your gross and net are the same. Your UK position depends on your residence status, and UK-source income such as rent stays taxable in Britain.

3. How does a Dubai salary compare with the same job in London?

The headline is usually lower in dirhams than the pound equivalent looks, but nothing is deducted. The comparison only works once you add annual rent, school fees and family health cover to the Dubai side.

4. Do I get a pension working in Dubai?

Not a state pension. Expatriate employees receive end of service gratuity instead, calculated on basic salary at 21 days a year for the first five years and 30 days a year after that.

5. Can I work for myself in Dubai instead of taking a salary?

Yes. A Fawri license from Meydan Free Zone sets up a UAE LLC in under 60 minutes from AED 15,000, with no NOC required from an existing sponsor, so you can invoice clients through your own company.

Topic Summary

1. Tax-Free Earnings

UK professionals earning a gross salary of £70,000 in England typically pay approximately £20,000 in income tax and National Insurance contributions, significantly reducing their take-home pay. In contrast, Dubai offers 0% income tax, allowing expatriates to retain their full gross salary.

2. Comparison of Salary Packages

According to the Michael Page UAE Salary Guide 2026, salaries in Dubai are often structured to attract international talent with competitive packages that may include additional allowances such as housing, transport, and education, thereby enhancing the overall remuneration.

3. Cost of Living Considerations

While Dubai’s tax-free environment is appealing, professionals should factor in the relatively high cost of living, including accommodation and schooling, when evaluating salary offers compared to the UK.

4. Social Security and Benefits

UK nationals working in Dubai are exempt from UK National Insurance payments while abroad but may need to consider their pension contributions and healthcare provisions, as Dubai does not provide social security benefits akin to the UK system.

5. Currency and Remittance

Salaries in Dubai are paid in UAE Dirhams (AED), which are pegged to the US Dollar. UK professionals should consider exchange rates and potential fluctuations when converting earnings back to British Pounds, especially in long-term financial planning.

Salaries in Dubai for UK Professionals: What to Expect

On £70,000 in England, income tax and National Insurance take roughly £20,000 before you see any of that money land in your bank account. In Dubai, you get it whole.

That one fact is why most British professionals look at salaries in Dubai for UK expats before they look at anything else about the move.

As enticing as Dubai’s 0% corporate tax sounds, a salary here has to pay for a few things your UK salary did not. A year's rent up front to school fees, the professionals who do best here are simply the ones who break down the whole package before they sign. Do that, and the advantage is yours to keep.

British interest keeps building. According to the Dubai Chamber of Commerce, by the end of March 2026, 10,334 active British companies were registered with them more than four times the 2020 figure.¹

A salary is also not the only way to earn here. Some UK professionals arrive on a package. Others arrive with a license and bill clients directly. Meydan Free Zone issues a business license in under 60 minutes, and the whole setup is done online, from the UK or anywhere in the world, so your company can be running before you fly out. And even if you are already here, you do not need a No Objection Certificate from an existing sponsor to open a company. All three routes are open to you.

What Can a UK Professional Actually Earn in Dubai?

The Michael Page UAE Salary Guide 2026 lists more than 500 roles. Over 60% of them pay between AED 10,000 and AED 40,000 a month. The top 10% start at AED 70,000. And pay runs from AED 7,000 for a retail sales associate to AED 130,000 for a managing director in banking, and banking and financial services holds the highest average at AED 53,020 a month.²

Level Typical monthly pay (AED) Roughly (GBP)
Junior, 0–3 years 7,000 – 12,000 £1,400 – £2,400
Mid-level, 4–8 years 15,000 – 30,000 £3,000 – £6,100
Senior manager 30,000 – 55,000 £6,100 – £11,100
Top 10% of the market 70,000+ £14,200+

Your sector matters more than job title. Banking, technology, legal and consultancy sit at the top. Consultancy has the widest spread, with senior roles paying more than double the starting figure. Office support and retail sit at the bottom with narrow bands and little room to climb.

Two things travel well from a UK career. British accounting, audit and governance training is the reference point serious businesses here work to. And Dubai's corporate tax regime is still young, so demand for tax, compliance and risk people is strong.

Your Gross Salary: UK vs. Dubai

According to the UK Government, you pay 20% income tax above £12,570, 40% above £50,270 and 45% above £125,140, plus National Insurance on top. Those thresholds are frozen, so every pay rise drags more of your income into the higher band.³

In the UAE there is no personal income tax on employment pay. What you agree is what lands. On a £70,000 UK salary you keep somewhere near £49,000. On the AED 27,000 a month that roughly matches it, you keep all of it.

That is where most comparisons stop. It should not be where yours does.

What Your Dubai Salary Has to Cover

What Makes Up a Good Dubai Salary

Two offers with the same total can be worth very different amounts.

  • Basic vs. Allowances: Basic pay is often only 50% to 60% of the package. Since gratuity is calculated on basic alone, a low basic quietly shrinks what you walk away with.
  • Housing Allowance: Paid monthly or annually changes whether you can meet a one cheque rent demand.
  • Family Cover: Health insurance and school support for dependants are the two lines that decide whether a family package works.
  • Flights: An annual return flight home for the family is standard in many packages and absent in others.
  • Notice and Probation: Contracts are all fixed term now, and notice periods of 30, 60 or 90 days are all common.

Earning Without a Salary in Dubai

Plenty of British professionals reach Dubai and find the ceiling is the employer, not the market. Consultants, contractors and specialists often bill more working directly than any package would pay them.

That route needs a business license rather than an offer letter. Here is what Meydan Free Zone gives you:

  • Business license in under 60 minutes: An instant LLC license from AED 15,000, roughly £3,040, issued fully online.
  • No sponsor NOC needed: You do not need a No Objection Certificate from an existing sponsor to open a company.
  • Add up to three business activity groups on one license: Chosen from more than 2,500 activities, so advisory, training and delivery work can sit inside the same company.
  • Guaranteed bank account setup: Your file goes to multiple partner banks rather than one at a time.
  • Visas when you need them: mResidency covers residence visas, medicals, Emirates ID and biometrics for you and your dependants.
  • Pay as you go: You add what the business needs when it needs it, rather than paying for it at setup.
  • A qualified free zone for corporate tax: Meeting the Qualifying Free Zone Person conditions gives 0% on qualifying income. Income that falls outside them is taxed at 9%, and mAccounting handles the filing.

You keep 100% of the company and can move capital and profit out without UAE tax on either.

Does Leaving the UK End My Tax Position?

Leaving the UK does not switch HMRC off by itself.

  • Tell HMRC you are going, using form P85 or your self assessment return.
  • Once you are correctly non-resident, UK tax applies only to UK-source income.
  • UK rental income stays taxable in the UK. Under the Non-Resident Landlord Scheme your agent or tenant deducts 20% at source unless you register to receive rent gross.
  • Selling UK residential property means reporting and paying capital gains tax within 60 days of completion, whether you live in Britain or not.
  • From April 2025, UK inheritance tax follows residence rather than domicile, and a tail can apply for years after you leave.

The UK-UAE double tax treaty decides which country taxes what. Take advice before you go, not after your first payslip.

In Conclusion

Dubai pays well, and it pays it to you rather than to a tax office. That advantage is genuine and it is the reason most British professionals come.

It is also a gross figure doing the work of a net one. The salary now carries your rent, your family's cover, your children's schooling and your retirement savings. A package that looks generous next to a UK salary can look thin once those four lines are filled in.

Do the sums on the whole package. Then ask the harder question: is being paid the right structure at all? For a British professional with several clients and a name they already trade on, a license can be worth more than a package.

Housing:

This is the biggest change. Many Dubai landlords still want the year's rent in one or two cheques, so you need the cash before you need the flat. Rent commonly eats 35% to 45% of pay where there is no housing allowance.

Schooling:

British curriculum places are widely available and expensive. Some packages cover fees for one or two children. Many cover nothing. Ask, and ask in writing.

Health Cover:

Employers in Dubai must provide health insurance for the employee. Cover for a spouse and children is a separate question and is often not included.

Pension and National Insurance:

There is no UAE state pension for expatriate workers and no employee National Insurance. Nothing is being set aside for you. If you want to protect your UK State Pension record, look at voluntary National Insurance contributions before you leave.

End-of-Service Gratuity:

This replaces a pension pot in most packages. As per the UAE gratuity calculation guide by Gulf News, after one full year, you earn 21 days of basic salary for each of the first five years and 30 days for each year after that, capped at two years' pay.⁴ Note the word basic. Housing and transport allowances are excluded.

Step 1, Split the Offer:

Ask for basic pay, allowances and benefits as separate lines, not one number.

Step 2, Price the Year:

Work out annual rent, schooling and family health cover before you compare anything.

Step 3, Check the Gratuity Base:

Confirm the basic figure your end of service pay will be built on.

Step 4, Sort the UK Side:

File your P85, sort any UK rental income, and check your National Insurance record.

Step 5, Decide on Employment or License:

If your income would come from several clients rather than one employer, price the licensed route too.
