Hospital Activities

This class covers short- and long-term hospital activities including medical, diagnostic and treatment services of general hospitals and specialised hospitals. General hospitals include community and regional hospitals, hospitals of non-profit organisations, university hospitals, and military-base and prison hospitals. Specialised hospitals include mental health and substance abuse hospitals, hospitals for infectious diseases, maternity hospitals and specialised sanatoriums. Activities are directed chiefly at inpatients under direct medical supervision and cover medical and paramedical staff services, laboratory and technical facilities including radiologic and anaesthesiologic services, emergency room services, operating room and pharmacy services, food and other hospital services, and family planning centres providing medical treatment with accommodation. Does not include veterinary activities, general laboratory testing, dental practice activities classified separately, private consultants' services to inpatients classified separately, medical laboratory testing classified separately, or ambulance transport classified separately.

Medical and Dental Practice Activities

This class covers medical consultation and treatment in general and specialised medicine by general practitioners, medical specialists and surgeons, carried out in private practice, group practices, hospital outpatient clinics, and clinics attached to firms, schools, aged care homes and labour organisations. Also covers dental practice activities of a general and specialised nature including dentistry, endodontics, paediatric dentistry, oral pathology and orthodontics; family planning centres providing medical treatment without accommodation; dental activities in operating rooms; and private consultants' services to inpatients. Does not include inpatient hospital activities or paramedical activities such as those of midwives, nurses and physiotherapists.

Other Human Health Activities

This class covers health activities for humans not performed by hospitals or medical doctors or dentists, including activities of nurses, midwives, physiotherapists and other paramedical practitioners in optometry, hydrotherapy, medical massage, occupational therapy, speech therapy, chiropody, homeopathy, chiropractic and acupuncture. Also covers dental paramedical personnel including dental therapists and hygienists; medical laboratories including X-ray and diagnostic imaging centres and blood analysis laboratories; blood banks, sperm banks and transplant organ banks; and ambulance transport of patients by any mode of transport including aircraft. Does not include non-medical laboratory testing, hospital activities, medical and dental practice activities, or nursing care facilities.

Residential Nursing Care Facilities

This class covers activities of residential facilities that provide nursing care, including homes for the elderly with nursing care, convalescent homes, rest homes with nursing care, nursing care facilities and nursing homes. Does not include in-home health care services provided by health professionals, homes for the elderly without or with only minimal nursing care, or social work activities with accommodation such as orphanages and homeless shelters.

Residential Care Activities for Mental Retardation, Mental Health and Substance Abuse

This class covers provision of residential care, not including licensed hospital care, to people with mental retardation, mental illness or substance abuse problems. Facilities provide room, board, protective supervision, counselling and some health care. Covers facilities for treatment of alcoholism and drug addiction, psychiatric convalescent homes, residential group homes for the emotionally disturbed, mental retardation facilities, and mental health halfway houses. Does not include temporary homeless shelters.

Residential Care Activities for the Elderly and Disabled

This class covers provision of residential and personal care services for elderly and disabled persons unable to fully care for themselves or who do not wish to live independently, typically including room, board, supervision and assistance with daily living such as housekeeping. Some facilities may provide skilled nursing care in separate on-site units. Covers assisted-living facilities, continuing care retirement communities, homes for the elderly with minimal nursing care, and rest homes without nursing care. Does not include homes for the elderly with nursing care, or social work activities with accommodation where medical treatment is not a material element.

Other Residential Care Activities

This class covers provision of residential and personal care services, on a round-the-clock basis, for persons other than the elderly and disabled who are unable to fully care for themselves or who do not wish to live independently. Covers orphanages, children's boarding homes and hostels, temporary homeless shelters, institutions for unmarried mothers and their children, halfway group homes for persons with social or personal problems, halfway homes for delinquents and offenders, and disciplinary camps. Does not include nursing care facilities, residential mental health and substance abuse facilities, residential aged care and disability facilities, or adoption activities.

Social Work Activities Without Accommodation for the Elderly and Disabled

This class covers social, counselling, welfare, referral and similar services aimed at elderly and disabled persons in their homes or elsewhere, delivered by public or private organisations, self-help groups and specialist counsellors. Covers visiting services for the elderly and disabled, day-care activities for elderly or handicapped adults, and vocational rehabilitation and habilitation for disabled persons where the education component is limited. Does not include compulsory social security programmes, residential care activities for the elderly and disabled, or day-care activities for handicapped children.

Other Social Work Activities Without Accommodation

This class covers social, counselling, welfare, refugee, referral and similar services delivered to individuals and families in their homes or elsewhere by public or private organisations, disaster relief organisations, self-help groups and specialist counsellors. Covers welfare and guidance for children and adolescents, adoption activities, prevention of cruelty to children, household budget counselling, marriage and family guidance, credit and debt counselling, community and neighbourhood activities, services for disaster victims, refugees and immigrants, vocational rehabilitation for unemployed persons, welfare eligibility determination, child day-care including for handicapped children, day facilities for the homeless and other socially vulnerable groups, and charitable fund-raising directed at social work. Does not include compulsory social security programmes or social work activities that include accommodation.
