Urban and suburban passenger land transport

This activity covers land transport of passengers by urban or suburban transport systems, including motorbuses, tramways, streetcars, trolley buses, underground and elevated railways. Services operate on scheduled routes with fixed timetables and fixed stops. It also includes town-to-airport and town-to-station lines, and the operation of funicular railways and aerial cableways as part of urban or suburban transit systems. It does not include passenger transport by inter-urban railways.

Other passenger land transport

This activity covers scheduled long-distance bus services, charters, excursions and occasional coach services, taxi operation, airport shuttles, and the operation of telfers, funiculars, ski and cable lifts not part of urban transit systems. It also includes renting of private cars with driver, operation of school buses and employee transport buses, and passenger transport by man- or animal-drawn vehicles. It does not include ambulance transport.

Freight transport by road

This activity covers all freight transport operations by road, including logging haulage, stock haulage, refrigerated haulage, heavy haulage, bulk haulage including tanker trucks, haulage of automobiles, and transport of waste materials without collection or disposal. It also includes furniture removal, renting of trucks with driver, and freight transport by man- or animal-drawn vehicles. It does not include log hauling within forests, distribution of water by trucks, or post and courier activities.

Sea and coastal water transport

This activity covers the transport of passengers or freight on vessels designed for operating on sea or coastal waters, including transport on great lakes where similar types of vessels are used.

Sea and coastal freight water transport

This activity covers the transport of freight over seas and coastal waters, whether scheduled or not, and transport by towing or pushing of barges, oil rigs and similar vessels. It does not include storage of freight, harbour operations such as docking, pilotage and vessel salvage, or cargo handling.

Inland water transport

This activity covers the transport of passengers or freight on inland waters, involving vessels that are not suitable for sea transport.

Inland passenger water transport

This activity covers the transport of passengers via rivers, canals, lakes and other inland waterways, including inside harbours and ports. It also includes the renting of pleasure boats with crew for inland water transport.

Inland freight water transport

This activity covers the transport of freight via rivers, canals, lakes and other inland waterways, including inside harbours and ports.

Passenger air transport

This activity covers the transport of passengers by air over regular routes and on regular schedules, charter flights for passengers, and scenic and sightseeing flights. It also includes renting of air-transport equipment with operator for passenger transportation, and general aviation activities such as transport of passengers by aero clubs for instruction or pleasure.

Freight air transport

This activity covers the transport of freight by air over regular routes and on regular schedules, non-scheduled transport of freight by air, launching of satellites and space vehicles, and space transport. It also includes renting of air-transport equipment with operator for freight transportation.

Warehousing and storage

This activity covers the operation of storage and warehouse facilities for all kinds of goods, including grain silos, general merchandise warehouses, refrigerated warehouses and storage tanks. It also includes storage of goods in foreign trade zones and blast freezing. It does not include parking facilities for motor vehicles, self-storage facilities, or renting of vacant space.

Support activities for transportation

This activity covers activities supporting the transport of passengers or freight, including the operation of parts of the transport infrastructure and activities related to handling freight immediately before or after transport or between transport segments. The operation and maintenance of all transport facilities is included.

Service activities incidental to land transportation

This activity covers activities related to land transport of passengers, animals or freight, including operation of terminal facilities such as railway stations and bus stations, operation of railroad infrastructure, roads, bridges, tunnels, car parks and bicycle parkings, switching and shunting, and towing and roadside assistance. It also includes liquefaction of gas for transportation purposes. It does not include cargo handling.

Service activities incidental to water transportation

his activity covers activities related to water transport of passengers, animals or freight, including operation of terminal facilities such as harbours and piers, waterway locks, navigation, pilotage and berthing activities, lighterage, salvage activities, and lighthouse activities. It does not include cargo handling or operation of marinas.

Service activities incidental to air transportation

This activity covers activities related to air transport of passengers, animals or freight, including operation of terminal facilities such as airway terminals, airport and air-traffic-control activities, and ground service activities on airfields. It also includes firefighting and fire-prevention services at airports. It does not include cargo handling or operation of flying schools.

Cargo handling

This activity covers loading and unloading of goods or passengers' luggage regardless of the mode of transport used, stevedoring, and loading and unloading of freight railway cars. It does not include the operation of terminal facilities.

Other transportation support activities

This activity covers forwarding of freight, arranging and organising transport operations by rail, road, sea or air, organisation of group and individual consignments, logistics activities including planning and supporting transportation, warehousing and distribution operations, issue and procurement of transport documents and waybills, activities of customs agents, sea-freight forwarders and air-cargo agents, brokerage for ship and aircraft space, and goods-handling operations such as temporary crating, uncrating, sampling and weighing of goods.

Postal activities

This activity covers the activities of postal services operating under a universal service obligation, including pickup, sorting, transport and delivery of letter-post and parcels domestically and internationally, collection of letter-mail and parcels from public letter-boxes or post offices, and distribution and delivery of mail and parcels. It does not include postal giro, postal savings activities or money order activities.

Courier activities

This activity covers pickup, sorting, transport and delivery of letter-post and parcels by firms not operating under a universal service obligation, domestically and internationally, distribution and delivery of mail and parcels, and home delivery services. It does not include general freight transport.
