Publishing of Books, Periodicals and Other Publishing Activities

This group covers the publishing of books, newspapers, magazines and other periodicals, directories and mailing lists, and other works such as photos, engravings, postcards, timetables, forms, posters and reproductions of works of art. Works are characterised by intellectual creativity and are typically protected by copyright.

Book Publishing

This class covers publishing of books, brochures, leaflets, dictionaries, encyclopedias, atlases, maps, charts, and audio books in print, electronic (CD, digital display) or online form. It does not include the production of globes, publishing of advertising material, publishing of music and sheet books, or the activities of independent authors.

Publishing of Directories and Mailing Lists

This class covers the publishing of mailing lists, telephone books, and other directories and compilations such as case law and pharmaceutical compendia, in print or electronic form. Copyright protects the form of the compilation rather than the underlying content.

Publishing of Newspapers, Journals and Periodicals

This class covers the publishing of newspapers (including advertising newspapers), periodicals, journals, and radio and television schedules, in print or electronic form including on the Internet.

Other Publishing Activities

This class covers the online and offline publishing of catalogues, photos, engravings, postcards, greeting cards, forms, posters, reproductions of artworks, advertising material, and statistical or other informational content. It does not include the retail sale of software or the online provision of software through application hosting or application service provisioning.

Motion Picture, Video and Television Programme Production Activities

This class covers the production of motion pictures, videos, television programmes, and television commercials. It does not include post-production activities, film duplication, sound recording and recording of books on tape, television broadcasting, film processing outside the motion picture industry, renting of video tapes or DVDs, or the activities of independent actors, directors, cartoonists, stage designers, or technical specialists.

Motion Picture, Video and Television Programme Post-Production Activities

This class covers post-production activities including editing, titling, subtitling, credits, closed captioning, CGI animation and special effects, film and tape transfers, motion picture film laboratory activities, and stock footage film library activities. It does not include film duplication (except reproduction for theatrical distribution), wholesale or retail of recorded media, film processing outside the motion picture industry, or activities of independent crew.

Motion Picture, Video and Television Programme Distribution Activities

This class covers the distribution of films, video tapes, DVDs and similar productions to cinemas, television networks, stations and exhibitors, and the acquisition of film, video tape and DVD distribution rights. It does not include film duplication or reproduction of motion picture film for theatrical distribution.

Motion Picture Projection Activities

This class covers the projection of motion pictures and videotapes in cinemas, open-air venues and other projection facilities, and the activities of cine-clubs.

Sound Recording and Music Publishing Activities

This class covers the production of original sound master recordings, studio and location sound recording services (including taped radio programming and audio for film and TV), and music publishing activities such as acquiring and registering copyrights, promoting and authorising compositions for use across recordings, radio, television, film and live performance, and distributing sound recordings to wholesalers, retailers or the public. It also includes the publishing of music and sheet books. It does not include reproduction from master copies or the wholesale of recorded audio tapes and disks.

Radio Broadcasting

This class covers broadcasting of audio programming via radio studios and transmission facilities to the public, affiliates or subscribers, including radio network operations via over-the-air, cable or satellite transmission, internet radio stations, and data broadcasting integrated with radio. It does not include the production of taped radio programming.

Television Programming and Broadcasting Activities

This class covers the creation of complete television channel programmes using purchased and self-produced components, for broadcast by the producing unit or via third-party distributors such as cable or satellite providers. Covers general and specialised channels, free-to-air and subscription formats, and video-on-demand channels. It does not include production of individual programme elements or the assembly and distribution of channel packages via cable or satellite to viewers.

Wired Telecommunications Activities

This class covers operating, maintaining or providing access to wired telecommunications infrastructure for the transmission of voice, data, text, sound and video, including landline switching and transmission facilities, cable distribution systems, and non-vocal telegraph communications. Also includes provision of internet access over wired infrastructure and purchasing capacity from network owners for resale. Does not include telecommunications resellers.

Wireless Telecommunications Activities

This class covers operating, maintaining or providing access to wireless telecommunications infrastructure for the transmission of voice, data, text, sound and video, including cellular, paging and other wireless networks. Also includes provision of internet access over wireless infrastructure and purchasing capacity from network owners for resale. Does not include telecommunications resellers.

Satellite Telecommunications Activities

This class covers operating, maintaining or providing access to satellite telecommunications infrastructure for the transmission of voice, data, text, sound and video, including direct-to-home satellite delivery of programming. Also includes provision of internet access via satellite infrastructure. Does not include telecommunications resellers.

Other Telecommunications Activities

This class covers specialised telecommunications services including satellite tracking, telemetry, radar operations, satellite terminal stations, dial-up and indirect internet access, public internet and telephone access facilities, VoIP provision, and telecommunications reselling. Does not include provision of internet access by operators of telecommunications infrastructure.

Computer Programming Activities

This class covers writing, modifying, testing and supporting software, including systems software, applications, databases and web pages, and customising existing applications for clients' information system environments. It does not include publishing of packaged software or planning and designing integrated computer systems.

Computer Consultancy and Computer Facilities Management Activities

This class covers planning and designing computer systems that integrate hardware, software and communications technologies, and providing on-site management and operation of clients' computer systems and data processing facilities. Units may supply hardware and software as part of their services. It does not include separate sale of hardware or software or separate installation of computers.

Data Processing, Hosting and Related Activities

This class covers provision of infrastructure for hosting, data processing and related activities, including web hosting, streaming services, application hosting, application service provisioning, mainframe time-sharing, complete data processing and report generation for clients, and data entry services.

News Agency Activities

This class covers news syndication and agency activities providing news, pictures and features to media organisations. It does not include the activities of independent photojournalists or independent journalists.

Other Information Service Activities (n.e.c.)

This class covers information service activities not elsewhere classified, including telephone-based information services, information search services on a contract or fee basis, and news and press clipping services. It does not include the activities of call centres.

Other Information Technology and Computer Service Activities

This class covers IT and computer-related services not classified elsewhere, including computer disaster recovery, installation and setup of personal computers, and software installation. It does not include mainframe installation, computer programming, consultancy, computer facilities management, or data processing and hosting.
